Noble Prize in the field of Optics

This year’s Noble prize is been awarded to three Scientist in Physics, namely the Americans Roy J Glauber and John L Hall as well as German Theodor W Haensch. Their contribution is in the field of OPTICS. The note has been released by the Royal Swiss Academy.

  • Glauber won for his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence. Glauber shared Half prize for his theoritical description of his discovery, describing the behaviour of the light particles in his discovery.
  • Hall and Haensch won “for their contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy, including the optical frequency comb technique”. The remaining half of the prize is been shared by these two scientist. Their invention leads to the determination of the color of the light atoms and molecules with extreme preceision.

So, the question is for what genre of applications does these invention is made used for? The importance of their contribution is , it paved a way to construct a Laser with extremely sharp colors and precise readings of all the colors of light. Also their contribution had made to develop an instrument to measure the frequency with an accuracy upto 15 digits. All these things combinely used in the development of extremely accurate clocks that might be used in space applications, GPS systems and also in the study of the stability of the constants of nature over time.

Regards & Thanks
